Pulmonary Alveolar Epithelial Cells, comprise alveolar type I cell (type I pneumocyte) and alveolar type II cell (type II pneumocyte), which are two main cell types in the alveolar epithelium. Type II Alveolar Epithelial Cells, also known as alveolar type II cell or type II pneumocyte, account for 5% of the alveolar surface area, can produce surfactant, differentiate into alveolar type I cells and restore the epithelium.
