Embryonic Structure

Embryonic structures include specialized tissues that develop during pregnancy, such as the amnion and chorion (fetal membranes), placenta, and umbilical cord. These tissues form the critical interface between the mother and the developing fetus and are essential for fetal protection, growth, and survival. The amnion provides a fluid-filled environment that cushions the fetus and prevents mechanical injury, while the chorion contributes to placental formation and mediates maternal–fetal exchange. The placenta functions as a highly specialized organ responsible for nutrient and oxygen transfer, waste removal, hormone secretion, and immune regulation. The umbilical cord connects the fetus to the placenta and contains blood vessels that transport oxygenated blood, nutrients, and metabolic waste between fetal and maternal circulations.

Cells derived from these embryonic structures perform diverse biological functions. Placental cells, including trophoblasts and stromal cells, regulate implantation, vascular remodeling, hormone production, and immune tolerance during pregnancy. Amniotic epithelial cells exhibit stem-like properties, secrete growth factors, and play roles in tissue repair and anti-inflammatory responses. Umbilical cord–derived cells, such as mesenchymal stromal cells and umbilical vein endothelial cells, support vascular development, angiogenesis, and regenerative processes. Chorion cells contribute to placental structure and signaling, while embryonic fibroblasts are widely used as supportive feeder layers and model systems for developmental and cellular biology studies.

Because of their developmental origin and functional plasticity, cells derived from embryonic structures are valuable tools for investigating fetal development, placental biology, stem cell regulation, immunology, and regenerative medicine applications. They are also increasingly used in tissue engineering, cell therapy research, and translational studies focused on pregnancy-related disorders and developmental diseases.
