Short Description 🔒

The BV-2 cell line is a murine microglia cell line derived from C57BL/6 mice, transformed using a v-raf/v-myc carrying retrovirus (J2). BV-2 cells resemble primary microglia in both phenotypical and functional properties.

BV-2 express key surface and intracellular markers typical of primary microglia, including Iba1, CD11b, F4/80, Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4). The expression level of these markers changes with the immune response of BV-2 to inflammatory stimuli, such as LPS and IFN-γ. After stimulation, BV-2 cells also produce cytokines, like TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, and generate nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species (ROS). During in vitro culture, BV-2 cells grow in resting state. exhibiting small cell bodies with ramified (branched) processes. Upon stimulation, they retract processes and become amoeboid, rounder, and more adherent.

Synonym: BV2; mouse microglia
